Walk into almost any supplement store today and you'll see an entire aisle dedicated to collagen.

- Energy drinks.

Every company promises healthier skin, stronger joints, thicker hair, faster recovery, or younger-looking skin. Some products cost less than twenty dollars, while others cost over one hundred dollars for a month's supply.
So who's telling the truth?
The honest answer is...
Some of them.
Collagen is one of the few supplements that actually has a growing body of scientific evidence supporting several of its uses. That's good news.
The bad news is that many companies take those legitimate studies and stretch the conclusions far beyond what the research actually shows.
Some imply that all collagen is the same.
Others suggest that more types of collagen automatically mean a better product.

While researchers continue studying exactly how this signaling occurs, this mechanism offers one explanation for the improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and joint comfort reported in many clinical trials.

The Golfer's Perspective
Every practice session creates tiny amounts of stress within your tendons and ligaments.
That's not necessarily a bad thing.
Your body adapts to training by repairing those tissues.
The challenge is that connective tissue remodels much more slowly than muscle.
If you're practicing several times each week or playing multiple rounds supporting connective tissue recovery becomes increasingly important, especially as you age.
Collagen isn't a substitute for smart programming or proper recovery.
But it may provide another tool to help support the tissues that allow you to keep swinging.
Why These Amino Acids Matter
Unlike whey protein, collagen is rich in several unique amino acids.
The three most important are:
Glycine
The most abundant amino acid in collagen.
Supports:

- Protein synthesis
- Formation of glutathione, one of the body's major antioxidant systems
Emerging research also suggests glycine may support healthy sleep quality in some individuals, although more research is needed.
Proline
An essential building block for collagen fibers.
Without adequate proline, collagen synthesis becomes less efficient.
Hydroxyproline
One of collagen's signature amino acids.
Hydroxyproline provides stability and strength to collagen fibers.
It is rarely found in significant amounts in other dietary proteins.
Did You Know?
Approximately one-third of every collagen molecule is made from glycine.
That's one reason collagen has a very different amino acid profile than whey protein, eggs, or meat.
It's also why collagen is excellent for connective tissue but not ideal as your primary protein source for building muscle.
Why Collagen Doesn't Replace Protein Powder
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people replacing their post-workout protein with collagen.
Here's the problem.
Collagen is an incomplete protein.
It contains very little leucine and essentially no tryptophan two amino acids that play important roles in muscle protein synthesis and overall protein quality.
If your goal is maximizing muscle growth or recovery after strength training, a complete protein such as whey, dairy, eggs, fish, meat, or a well-formulated plant protein remains the better choice.
Think of collagen as connective tissue nutrition, not muscle-building nutrition.
Both can have a place in a well-designed nutrition plan.

Part 3: Does Collagen Actually Work?
What Human Research Says About Skin, Joints, Tendons, Bones, and Exercise Recovery
Understanding how collagen is digested and used by the body is important, but it does not answer the question most people really care about:
Does taking a collagen supplement produce noticeable results?
The honest answer is:
It can, depending on what you expect it to accomplish.
The strongest evidence supports collagen supplementation for certain aspects of skin health and joint comfort. Research involving tendons, bones, exercise recovery, and body composition is promising, but it is not equally strong across every category.
Collagen also does not work overnight. Most clinical trials showing meaningful improvements have lasted approximately 8–24 weeks, and some studies involving bones or chronic tendon problems have continued for six months or longer.
That is important because supplement advertising often creates unrealistic expectations. A photograph of smooth skin or a pain-free athlete may imply immediate transformation, but connective tissues remodel slowly. Collagen should be viewed as a long-term nutritional tool, not a quick fix.
Collagen and Skin Health
Skin health is probably the most heavily advertised use of collagen.
Companies commonly claim that collagen can:
- Improve skin hydration
- Increase elasticity
- Reduce the appearance of wrinkles
- Produce younger-looking skin
- Strengthen hair and nails
Of these claims, hydration and elasticity currently have the strongest scientific support.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 26 randomized controlled trials involving 1,721 participants. The combined results indicated that hydrolyzed collagen supplementation significantly improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo.
An earlier meta-analysis also reported favorable changes in hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles following hydrolyzed collagen supplementation. Many of the included interventions lasted approximately 8–12 weeks, although products, dosages, study populations, and outcome measurements varied considerably.
That does not mean collagen functions like a cosmetic procedure. The improvements found in research are generally modest. Collagen may help support skin quality over time, but advertisements showing dramatic “before and after” transformations should be viewed skeptically.
Research Spotlight
How convincing is the evidence for younger-looking skin?
A more recent meta-analysis published in 2025 reached an important and more cautious conclusion.
When researchers combined all 23 included randomized trials, collagen supplementation appeared to improve hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles. However, when they separated the studies according to funding source, the independently funded studies did not show the same significant benefits observed in industry-funded trials.
That does not prove the positive studies were inaccurate. Industry funding does not automatically invalidate research.
However, it does remind us to ask:
- Who paid for the study?
- Was the exact product sold by the sponsor?
- Was the study large enough?
- Were the researchers and participants properly blinded?
- Was the improvement meaningful or simply statistically detectable?
My Take
I believe the evidence supports a potential modest benefit for skin hydration and elasticity, particularly after consistent use for several months.
I would not promise dramatic wrinkle removal, thicker hair, or a major reversal of visible aging. Those claims move well beyond what the current evidence can confidently guarantee.

Marketing Myth
“Collagen Will Reverse Aging.”
Verdict: Marketing exaggeration
Collagen cannot stop the natural aging process.
Skin appearance is influenced by many factors, including:
- Genetics
- Sun exposure
- Smoking
- Sleep
- Hydration
- Overall nutrition
- Hormonal changes
- Environmental exposure
A collagen supplement may provide modest support, but it cannot erase decades of sun damage or replace proper skin protection.
When a company uses phrases such as reverse aging, erase wrinkles, or restore youthful skin, it is turning limited evidence into an unrealistic promise.
Collagen and Joint Comfort
Joint health is another area where collagen research is relatively encouraging.
However, it is important to distinguish between two different products:
- Hydrolyzed collagen peptides
- Undenatured Type II collagen, often sold as UC-II®
Hydrolyzed collagen provides smaller peptides and amino acids that may support connective-tissue metabolism.
Undenatured Type II collagen appears to work through an immune-related process called oral tolerance. It is generally used in much smaller amounts than hydrolyzed collagen peptides.
A 2025 meta-analysis concluded that oral collagen supplementation produced statistically and clinically meaningful improvements in knee osteoarthritis pain and function.
A separate meta-analysis of collagen peptides also found significant pain reduction among people with knee osteoarthritis, although the researchers emphasized possible bias and the need for additional high-quality trials.
Research on undenatured Type II collagen has likewise produced promising results. A 2018 review of dietary supplements for osteoarthritis found that undenatured Type II collagen produced a clinically important improvement in medium-term pain, although long-term effects remained uncertain.

The Golfer’s Perspective
For golfers, joint discomfort is not always caused by diagnosed osteoarthritis.
Repeated rounds and practice sessions can irritate the:
- Lead knee
- Hips
- Lower back
- Shoulders
- Elbows
- Wrists and hands
One randomized study involving 139 physically active adults with activity-related knee discomfort found that 5 grams of specific collagen peptides daily for 12 weeks reduced exercise-related knee pain compared with placebo.
That does not mean collagen can correct poor swing mechanics, weak supporting muscles, excessive practice volume, or inadequate recovery.
However, collagen may be a useful addition to a larger plan involving:
- Strength training
- Mobility work
- Progressive loading
- Adequate recovery
- Proper medical evaluation when pain persists

Important Distinction

Those outcomes matter. Feeling better and moving more easily are valuable improvements.
But consumers should be cautious when companies claim their collagen product can regrow cartilage, reverse arthritis, or rebuild joints. Those statements are much stronger than the available evidence supports.
Collagen and Tendons
Tendon health is especially relevant to golfers, runners, lifters, and aging athletes.
Tendons are primarily composed of Type I collagen and are responsible for transferring force from muscle to bone. Unlike muscle tissue, tendons receive a relatively limited blood supply and often adapt slowly to training.
The idea behind collagen supplementation is reasonable: provide collagen-rich amino acids and peptides around the time tendons are being stimulated through exercise.
But the human research is mixed.
A small pilot study involving people with chronic Achilles tendinopathy found that specific collagen peptides combined with a structured calf-strengthening program improved symptoms. However, because the supplement was used alongside exercise and because the study was small, we cannot conclude that collagen alone produced the improvement.
A 2023 randomized trial found that collagen peptides enhanced certain changes in patellar-tendon morphology during 14 weeks of high-load resistance training.
However, another controlled study in healthy young men found that collagen supplementation did not enhance resistance-training-induced tendon size or mechanical properties compared with placebo.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that collagen combined with exercise may improve tendon morphology and several musculoskeletal outcomes, but the certainty of the evidence was only low to moderate.
Research Spotlight
Is collagen useful for an injured tendon?
The research suggests that collagen may be most useful when it accompanies an appropriate rehabilitation program.
Exercise provides the signal that tells the tendon it needs to adapt.
Collagen may provide nutritional support for that adaptation.
Without progressive loading, collagen supplementation alone is unlikely to rehabilitate an injured tendon.
This is similar to taking protein powder without exercising. The nutrient may provide useful building materials, but the body still needs an appropriate training stimulus.
My Take
For someone completing a structured rehabilitation program for golfer’s elbow, patellar tendinopathy, Achilles tendinopathy, or another overuse injury, collagen may be worth considering.
I would never recommend it as a replacement for:
- A proper diagnosis
- Progressive tendon loading
- Correcting training errors
- Improving movement mechanics
- Allowing sufficient recovery
But it can help in the recovery process, allowing your body to repair itself appropriately. What you are doing is giving your body all the tools that it needs to properly recover. Your body is still repairing itself; collagen is not some kind of magic healer.

Does Vitamin C Make Collagen More Effective?
Vitamin C is essential for normal collagen synthesis, but that fact is sometimes misrepresented in supplement advertising.
Your body requires vitamin C to form and stabilize collagen. If someone is deficient, collagen production and wound healing can be impaired.
A small laboratory and exercise study found that vitamin C-enriched gelatin taken before intermittent exercise increased a blood marker associated with collagen synthesis. The results were biologically interesting, but the study did not prove that the protocol prevents injuries or heals damaged tendons in real-world athletes.
This distinction matters.
Vitamin C supports your body’s collagen-building machinery, but it does not necessarily mean everyone needs a high-dose vitamin C supplement.
Many people can obtain adequate vitamin C through foods such as:
- Bell peppers
- Citrus fruit
- Kiwi
- Strawberries
- Broccoli
- Brussels sprouts
Taking collagen with a vitamin C-rich meal or snack is a sensible approach. Megadosing vitamin C is unlikely to provide additional collagen benefits once your nutritional needs are met.

Collagen and Bone Health
Bone is sometimes imagined as a solid block of calcium, but its structure also contains a collagen-rich protein framework.
Type I collagen gives bone flexibility and tensile strength, while minerals contribute hardness and rigidity.
Several studies have investigated whether collagen peptides can support bone health, particularly in postmenopausal women.
A randomized controlled trial involving postmenopausal women with age-related bone loss reported that 5 grams of specific collagen peptides daily for 12 months increased bone-mineral density compared with placebo and favorably influenced certain bone-turnover markers.
A later follow-up study suggested that continued supplementation was associated with further improvements in spinal and femoral-neck bone-mineral density.
These results are promising, but they should be interpreted carefully. Much of the positive research has used specific branded collagen peptides in relatively narrow populations.
Collagen should not be presented as a substitute for established bone-health strategies, including:
- Resistance training
- Weight-bearing exercise
- Adequate calcium
- Adequate vitamin D
- Sufficient total protein

Think of collagen as one possible supporting piece, not the foundation of osteoporosis prevention or treatment.
Collagen and Exercise Recovery
Some collagen products are advertised as post-workout recovery supplements.
This requires careful explanation.
A 2021 systematic review found that collagen supplementation appeared most beneficial for joint function and joint pain. Some studies reported improvements in body composition, strength, or recovery, but the evidence was less consistent than it was for joint-related outcomes.
Collagen is rich in glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, but it contains relatively little leucine and lacks an ideal essential-amino-acid profile for stimulating muscle protein synthesis.
That means collagen should not replace:

- Dairy
