Lower Body Separation Cable Press

One of the most important skills in an efficient golf swing is creating kinematic sequence, the proper order in which each segment of the body accelerates. Elite golfers don't start the downswing with their arms or shoulders. Instead, they shift pressure into the lead side, begin rotating the hips, then allow the core, chest, arms, and finally the club to accelerate in sequence.

The Lower Body Separation Cable Press reinforces that pattern by teaching the lower body to lead while the upper body stays loaded momentarily. As the hips rotate, the obliques transfer force into the chest press, mimicking how power moves through the body during the downswing. The result is improved sequencing, greater rotational efficiency, and a more powerful, repeatable golf swing.

Lower Body Separation Cable Press Instructions

  • Attach a cable handle at chest height.
  • Stand sideways to the cable machine in an athletic golf stance.
  1. Hold the handle against your chest with both hands, keeping your elbows comfortably bent.
  2. Brace your core and maintain your golf posture.
  3. Begin with your shoulders turned slightly away from the target, creating light tension in the cable.
  4. Initiate the movement by driving pressure into your lead foot and rotating your hips toward the target.
  5. Allow your hips to rotate first while your shoulders remain back for a brief moment.
  6. Once your hips have started the movement, engage your core and chest to press the handle forward as your upper body rotates through.
  7. Finish balanced with your chest facing the target and your arms fully extended.
  8. Slowly return to the starting position and repeat.

What You Should Feel

  • Your lead glute stabilizing your body.
  • Your obliques transferring force from your hips to your upper body.
  • Your core driving the chest press.
  • Your chest and shoulders finishing the movement—not initiating it.
  • A smooth transfer of energy from your feet through your hands.

Tips

  • Lead with your hips. Think about your belt buckle beginning the movement before your chest.
  • Shift pressure first. Feel your weight move into your lead foot before your shoulders rotate.
  • Keep your shoulders back briefly. Resist the urge to fire your upper body immediately.
  • Press after the hips move. The chest press should be a result of the hips and core rotating, not the movement that starts the exercise.
  • Brace your core throughout. Your abs should transfer force—not create it by themselves.
  • Maintain golf posture. Avoid standing up as you rotate.
  • Finish tall and balanced. Your lead leg should be stable at the end of each repetition.
  • Control the return. Resist the cable as you rotate back to the starting position.

Common Mistakes

  • Pressing with the arms before the hips move.
  • Rotating the shoulders and hips at the same time.
  • Spinning the hips without shifting pressure into the lead leg.
  • Standing up during the movement.
  • Losing balance at the finish.
  • Pulling the cable instead of rotating through it.
  • Allowing the trail heel to stay planted too long.
  • Rushing the exercise and losing proper sequencing.

  • Develops hip-to-shoulder separation for greater rotational power.
  • Increases core strength during dynamic rotation.
  • Enhances lead leg stability through impact.
  • Reinforces proper weight transfer.
  • Improves force transfer from the ground into the club.
  • Builds explosive rotational power.
  • Promotes better balance throughout the swing.
  • Improves timing between the hips, torso, and arms.
