Torso Twist and Press
The torso twist and press is one of the best exercises for golfers because it builds the exact kind of core strength, control, and rotational stability you need for an efficient, powerful, and repeatable golf swing.

Primary Muscles Used

Torso Twist and Press Instructions
- Anchor the band: Attach a RIP Trainer or resistance band at about chest height to a stable point (like a cable machine or sturdy anchor).
- Stand with your back to the anchor point so the band pulls from one side.
- Hold the RIP Trainer with both hands, close to your chest.
- Feet should be about shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and core braced.
- Extend your arms straight out from your chest until they’re fully extended.
- You should feel the band trying to pull you sideways — resist that pull by keeping your core tight.
- While keeping your arms extended, rotate your torso towards the anchor point (the direction the band’s pull).
- Keep hips and knees mostly stable; the movement comes from your upper body and core.
- Slowly rotate back to the center with control.
- Bring your hands back to your chest to complete one rep.
- Repeat.
- Perform with the band on the other side of your body.
Tips
- Keep your shoulders down and back (avoid shrugging).
- Maintain a neutral spine throughout.
- Don’t let the band jerk you — resist the pull the whole time.
- Breathe out as you press and rotate; breathe in as you return.

Benefits for the Torso Twist and Press
- Improves Core Stability and Anti-Rotation Strength. In golf, your core must resist unwanted motion while transferring energy from your lower body to your upper body during the swing.
- This exercise trains your abs, obliques, and deep stabilizers (like the transverse abdominis) to control rotation, not just create it — helping you stay balanced and powerful through impact.
- Unlike pure twisting exercises, this version teaches you to initiate and stop rotation with control.
- That mimics the backswing–downswing transition, where golfers must stabilize at the top before unleashing power.
- Strengthening your ability to resist rotation helps you maintain posture during your swing — especially through impact, where many golfers lose spine angle.
