TRX Rip Trainer Hip-to-Core Separation Drill

One of the defining characteristics of powerful golfers is their ability to create separation between the lower and upper body during the transition from backswing to downswing. As the hips begin moving toward the target, the shoulders and arms remain loaded for a brief moment. This creates an elastic stretch through the core—often referred to as the X-Factor Stretch—that allows the body to store and release energy more efficiently.

This drill teaches that exact sequence. By learning to initiate the downswing with the hips while allowing the torso, arms, and club to naturally follow, golfers improve energy transfer through the kinetic chain. The result is often greater clubhead speed, more consistent ball striking, improved balance, and reduced reliance on the arms to generate power.

TRX Rip Trainer Hip-to-Core Separation Drill Instructions

  • Attach the TRX Rip Trainer securely at approximately waist height.
  • Stand sideways to the anchor in an athletic golf stance.
  1. Hold the Rip Trainer with both hands, maintaining light tension throughout the exercise.
  2. Brace your core and maintain your golf posture.
  3. Begin in a position that resembles the top of your backswing.
  4. Initiate the movement by rotating your hips toward the target while keeping your shoulders and hands back momentarily.
  5. Once the hips have started moving, allow your core, chest, arms, and the Rip Trainer to rotate through naturally.
  6. Finish in a balanced follow-through with your chest facing the target.
  7. Slowly return to the starting position and repeat.

What You Should Feel

  • Your hips initiating the movement.
  • Your obliques and deep core muscles transferring force.
  • Your lead glute stabilizing your pelvis.
  • A stretch across your trunk as your hips begin rotating before your shoulders.
  • Smooth acceleration as your upper body catches up.

Tips

  • Start the movement from the ground up. Feel your feet and hips initiate the downswing.
  • Let your upper body stay back briefly. Don't rush your shoulders or arms from the top.
  • Feel your core unwind naturally. Your torso should respond to your hips rather than lead them.
  • Keep your arms relaxed. The Rip Trainer should follow your body—not pull it.
  • Maintain your golf posture. Avoid standing up as you rotate.
  • Drive through your lead leg. Feel pressure move into your lead heel as your hips begin rotating.
  • Rotate around a stable lead side. Your lead hip should become the center of rotation.
  • Finish balanced. Complete every repetition with control.

Common Mistakes

  • Rotating the shoulders at the same time as the hips.
  • Pulling the Rip Trainer with the arms.
  • Spinning the hips without shifting pressure into the lead side.
  • Standing up during the rotation.
  • Losing balance at the finish.
  • Allowing the knees to collapse inward.
  • Using momentum instead of controlled sequencing.
  • Over-rotating the upper body early.
